1+1 = New construction carbon calculator unveiled

By Roxanne Millar

A free online carbon calculator that could keep budgets on track has been developed to help the construction industry go green.

The calculator helps the industry to evaluate sustainable options at design stages of construction and keep costs associated with carbon saving properly budgeted for.

Its developer is project manager Faithful+Gould and it is already being used by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to design schools, with a 60% reduction in carbon emissions.

The calculator uses assumptions when project specific data is unavailable, but allows users to update the details later when specific data is known.

Faithful+Gould director Sean Lockie said the calculator could be used by various building sectors wanting to go green.

He said: “We have made this tool available to everyone in a bid to boost the green credentials of the industry, as too often carbon saving initiatives are dropped from projects because they have not been properly budgeted for at the beginning.”

The company has also created Atkins ROCC (Remediation Options Carbon Calculator) that assesses carbon dioxide emissions associated with a range of land remediation options.
