Northern Ireland's Maze stadium plans abandoned

Plans to build a £140m national sports stadium in Northern Ireland have been abandoned today.

The proposed 40,000 all-seater stadium was to be built on the site of the Maze Prison, located just outside Lisburn, south-west of Belfast, however due to opposition from unionists, plans have been scrapped.

The project for a national stadium was set to show football, rugby and Gaelic football- the three main sports in Northern Ireland and even had backing from Sinn Fein and the Gaelic Athletic Association, the Guardian reported.

With the collapse of this project authorities are now looking to build a 25,000 capacity football ground which would replace Windsor Park.
