The world’s longest sea bridge was opened yesterday across the Hangzhou Bay in China.

The 22-mile-long bridge linking Shanghai to Ningbo was officially unveiled on state television and is set to reduce the driving distance for commuters by 75 miles.

A cable-stayed structure is incorporated in the £500 million build which began construction back in November 2003. Around 30% of the money came from private investors.

At 22 miles long, the new sea bridge is designed to last 100 years and has eclipsed the record previously set by the Donghai Bridge at 20.2 miles which links Shanghai to Yang-shan.
