Marks and Spencer appoints BRE to become carbon neutral

Marks and Spencer has appointed the BRE to help with its ambitious plans to become carbon neutral.

The retailer has entered into a five-year partnership deal with the consultancy group to develop strategies to meet its sustainable goals, including banning waste from landfill and using only sustainable raw materials by 2012.

M&S chief executive Stuart Rose said the company did not have the know-how to achieve its 'Plan A' environmentally-friendly goals alone.

"With Plan A we have set ourselves some deliberately ambitious targets and we know that we don't have all the answers," he said.

"This partnership will give us full access to BRE's expertise and leading-edge capability, to help us create sustainable solutions that we can use in the building or refurbishment of all of our stores."

The BRE will develop a set of sustainable construction guidelines for the retailer, analyse store designs and select construction materials.
