SED 2008 preview: Site Clearance Zone

In the eight years since SED introduced a dedicated Site Clearance Zone, the demolition and recycling industries have moved from the construction industry's wings to centre-stage - and plant manufacturers have responded. This type of equipment is made by a number of manufacturers in a wide range of sizes and shapes and is now found in all corners of the SED site.

To help visitors get to grips with the recycling-related equipment on show at SED, the coverage is divided into carrier-mounted and freestanding equipment.

Carrier mounted

The need to recycle material on ever-smaller sites led first to the introduction of mini-crushers and screens and now to the rise of crushing and screening bucket attachments for excavators, wheel loaders and the like. SED visitors will be able to see a selection of the latest attachments and evaluate many on the demo plot.

A prime example is Anross, which will launch its Crusha buckets at SED. These excavator-mounted crushing attachments come in two sizes: the CB40 for 2t to 5t carriers and the CB80 (in action in the Site Clearance Zone) for excavators from 6t to 9t including backhoes.

"We have long intended to introduce a crushing bucket to operate alongside our Segregator screening bucket," says Anross managing director Rod Leyland. The unit does not need a two-way circuit and has twin rams to maximise power from the excavator's breaker circuit enabling it to process up to 10t/hr.

An extended range of Anross Selecta (4 in 1) excavator buckets will be shown, including the new SB50 for 3t to 6t machines and the SB200 for 15t to 21t carriers.

Making its UK debut at the show will be Flipscreen, an Australian-manufactured screening attachment displayed by Edwards Machinery. The device can be mounted on an excavator, a wheel loader or a skid steer, and does not work by shaking or vibrating the contents. Instead, the bucket rotates backwards in the frame, with the smaller material falling through a screen fitted to the rear and top of the enclosure. The retained oversize material is discharged by rotating the bucket forwards. According to the company, Flipscreen can process rock, concrete, hardcore and topsoil at up to 240t/hr with the high-tensile screen (available in 20mm to 200mm mesh) changeable in five minutes without using any special tools. Units on display will include the S30 for skid steers, the excavator mounted E50 and E80 and the new BL 80 backhoe loader model.

Another debutant is Dig A Crusher's Digascreener range of dipper-mounted screening bucket for 10t to 35t carriers. The new screens complement the company's crusher bucket attachment range and come as the S-series, R-series and V-series.

The S-Series uses round blades to reduce clogging, enabling it to screen and mix wet or sticky materials. Its blades can be spaced to suit various applications and repel, rather than crush, oversized objects.

A rotating action separates materials in the R-Series bucket. The rotating bucket removes fines, while retaining the larger material and is said to be the perfect attachment for excavators, wheel loaders and backhoes.

The V-Series has a vibrating action with twin gratings connected to a hydraulically-powered eccentric shaft. The device is said to be well suited to loading concrete crushers, backfilling trenches and segregating demolition waste prior to processing and recycling.

Those looking for more traditional dipper-mounted gear should visit Indeco's stand to view breakers ranging from a unit for a sub-1t machine, to those suiting 60t carriers. Also on show will be examples of Indeco's pulveriser and the four-model US-built range of excavator-mounted compaction plates for carriers up to 45t.

Standalone machines

While the mini crusher market is rapidly maturing, new machines and innovations are still coming to market. For instance, local manufacturer Digbits will unveil its 3t Bavtrack 025 mini crusher at SED. The machine has patented twin-jaw technology, with a 630mm x 330mm jaw feed area, for "unrivalled crushing capacity". However, it remains a 1.2m-wide footprint.

The new machine will be put through its paces on the demo plot alongside its established stablemate the Bav3 Alligator Crusher. On static display will be the company's range of excavator buckets, attachments and rubber tracks.

Mini crusher pioneer Red Rhino has chosen to exhibit in the main showground (Avenue M). On display will be its 4000 series compact crusher (a sub-1.5t unit capable of processing 24t per day) and the 3t/80t per day 5000 series machine. Also on show will be the heavyweight 7000 series - a 9.5t unit capable of processing up to 40t/hr.

Also at the heavier end, Baughans will use the show to introduce its 24 x 15 tracked single toggle jaw crusher designed to process skip waste. The unit weighs less than 12t and the company says once on site, the machine can be set up within minutes, and crush between 15t and 40t per hour.

The firm will also show its three-way split screen, two-way mini screener and examples from its range of crushers, crushing buckets, grabs and grapples suiting excavators from 1.5t to 40t.

In action on Global Construction's demo plot will be the Caesar 3 crusher from Guidetti - a 10t machine with dust suppression, an over-band magnet and side conveyor. Also on display will be a 2.5t swivel tracked dumper from Messersi, featuring a rotating seat, two-speed hydraulic tracking and low ground pressure.

Wood chipper and shredder specialist GreenMech will launch the Multi Task 120 at the show. The unit comes with a fully enclosed ROPS and FOPS cab, an 89kW engine, steel tracks and quick-release attachment mounting plate. It employs the SAFE Trak system, which allows the machine to traverse banks in excess of 35°. Examples of its range of chippers and shredders (both tracked and towed) will also be displayed.

Making its first SED appearance is Northern Ireland mobile screening equipment manufacturer Portafill International, displaying examples from its machine range. This will include the 3000 CT screener, which the firm describes as a high-yield, but ultra-portable screening plant that fits inside a single container for ease of transport.

Ground maintenance and top dresser specialist Ultra Spreader International will make its SED debut this year - in the Concrete Zone. It will display its new Ultra Compact jaw crusher, which can be towed behind a 4x4 and is targeted at small demolition jobs. Other products include a mobile Ultra Trommel Screen.

Another SED newcomer is Europe Recycling Equipment. It will use the show to introduce the Precision Husky range of horizontal grinders, which are suitable for demolition timber shredding, site vegetation clearance and chipping timber for Bio Fuel. Examples from its waste treatment and recycling machinery ranges will also be displayed.

While the Wirtgen Group manufactures a range of equipment, it is the new HD range of Hamm tandem rollers that will feature prominently on its stand. The 10-model range spans 1.5t to 4.2t and has an unusual layout allowing for a tapered bonnet giving a better view of the roller edges. A heavier (6.8t) Hamm 3307 will also be displayed, alongside a 1303-2 paver from sister company Vögele.
