Government plans £200m social housing boost

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has unveiled plans for government to spend £200m buying up unsold new homes in order to rent them out to social housing tenants.

The announcement came as part of a package of measures which also revealed that amendments to the Construction Act are finally set to be pushed through Parliament.

The new homes would be available either on a social for rent or shared ownership basis.
