Willmott Dixon has clinched Middlesbrough's £100m Building Schools for the Future scheme after fighting off competition from rival Laing O'Rourke for the National Academies framework job.
It is Willmott Dixon's third win under the framework, bringing its total value of work to £150m.
Sources said O'Rourke put up a fierce fight. One said: "Laing O'Rourke threw all they had at this scheme. They have a strong presence in the area. They just don't seem to be able to crack BSF like they have ProCure21."
Laing O'Rourke, along with Skanska, is lagging behind the other four framework members - Balfour Beatty, Carillion, Kier and Willmott Dixon. Both have yet to win any contracts, two years into the four-year deal.
