Contractors are turning to the over-50s to solve skills shortages because youngsters are not up to the job.
Figures from the Tenon Forum think-tank show 39% of firms think graduates are not ready to work. And 25% complained about poor literacy and numeracy among school leavers.
More than a fifth of construction businesses are now favouring the hiring of older workers over college leavers.
Tenon chief executive Andy Raynor said: "Older members of staff can bring huge benefits to an organisation and we expect to see more and more entrepreneurial businesses taking a flexible approach to recruitment and using this valuable skills base."
