Unexpected lift for gloomy US housebuilders

Construction of new homes rose unexpectedly in April in the US, offering hope that the housing market gloom is set to lift.

The Commerce Department said that construction rose by 8.2% in April to an annual rate of 1.03 million homes.

Activity in March was the slowest for 17 years.
