Birse has edged out four rivals for a £30m Cheshire County Council road and rail deal.
The firm will now work up target costs for the A34 Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley bypass and if the Department for Transport gives the bid the green light, which is expected to happen in July, Birse will formally be awarded the scheme.
A rail bridge also figures in the overall project and it is understood that Birse's rail division has scooped that as well.
Work in earnest on site is due to start early next year, for completion in two years' time.
Also in the hunt for the contract were Costain, Morgan Est, Norwest Holst and Edmund Nuttall.
