Isle of Wight: Tender for Refurbishment of Pontoons, Piles, and Slipways

The Isle of Wight Council is inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced companies who wish to be considered for inclusion on the tender list for the above contract. Details of the works are given below, along with details of where you can obtain the pre-qualification questionnaire.

The intention is that works will be undertaken under an ICE Design & Construct contract, and the main works will involve the following;

An existing pontoon with four guide piles are in place on the eastern side of the River Medina and the guide piles have been condemned by the harbour commission. Four new guide piles will be required with the pontoon also being taken away and refurbished. On the Western side of the River Medina the work will involve the installation of a DDA compliant gangway to the existing pontoon. This may also require works to the existing pontoon to ensure compatibility.

The remaining works will be to improve the existing slipways for the Cowes Floating Bridge on both the West and East sides. Over the years the concrete slipways have been overlaid with HRA and has consequently badly rutted up when the floating bridge docks during low tides. This has now become a problem for the bridge when docking at low tide and become a potential hazard to pedestrian and cycle users. The proposed works involve taking up areas of the existing slipway surfacing and overlaying with a new double reinforced concrete slab

The floating bridge will be out of action during October 2008 for essential maintenance, and the initial intention is to try and aim for works to the slipways to be undertaken during this period, endeavouring to minimise disruption to passengers, with the pontoon refurbishment work to be undertaken during January 2009. However, if this is not achieved, all works will be undertaken between January and March 2009, with the refurbishment to the pontoons undertaken first, so that a temporary passenger service can run whilst the floating bridge is out of action due to the slipway works.

The successful company will be expected to undertake tasks such as, all site investigations, surveys, liaison with interested bodies and statutory undertakers, preliminary and detailed design, and construction and supervision of works.

Expressions of interest can be submitted by completing a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire pack, which is to be returned by no later than 12 noon on the 09th June 2008. The questionnaire can be obtained from:
