Chicago considers buying flatpack London Olympic stadium

Argos’ flatpack building trend has found a new fan in the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics.

Senior officials are considering dismantling, boxing up and shipping some of the Olympic Stadium to Chicago, an early favourite to host the 2016 Olympics.

Up to 55,000 seats from the 80,000 arena could be transported to Washington Park in Chicago to expand a planned 7,500 capacity arena into the main stadium.

The Guardian reports the tactic could keep costs down, allowing poorer countries to play host to the games.

It could also raise massive money to offset the rising costs of the £9.3bn London games.

Organisers are investigating if the stadium can be bolted together to allow it to be dismantled and resurrected in another country.

The flatpack trend hit a high note earlier this month when Argos launched a £13,000 DIY house that can be assembled in a matter of days.
