Two of Britain’s most controversial building projects – Wembley Stadium and Heathrow’s Terminal 5 – have been named among Britain’s best buildings.
The two structures have been named in a list of 92 top buildings by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) along with St Pancras International Station and a tiny beachside café in Littlehampton.
But the competition has attracted its own controversy as well, with critics accusing judges of ignoring traditional buildings.
Classical and traditional architects are furious there are no old-style buildings in the RIBA list, which celebrates modernism.
Classic architect Robert Adam told the Guardian the awards were a “con” and said the RIBA and architectural professional were behaving like “style facists”.
Wembley Stadium was designed by Foster + Partners and HOK Sport and applauded for its "landmark" arch, while T5 was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and noted by RIBA as "a triumph of quality of thought, tenacity of purpose and attention to passengers' needs."
