NY crane collapse update - one confirmed dead

One person is confirmed dead after a crane smashed into a 23-storey apartment building in New York and crashed onto the street below.

One body, believed to be that of a construction worker, has been bought out of the rubble at East 91st Street and First Avenue on the Upper East Side.

Witnesses reported seeing a man in the cabin of the crane moments before its collapse, while construction workers were seen stroking the stretcher of the dead person.

It is not known if there has been any other fatalities, but rescue workers have pulled others out of the wreckage.

Their conditions are not known.

Witnesses have reported seeing the entire cab falling off the crane and hitting the penthouse of the building.

It is believed the crane toppled over onto the building at about 8am local time (around 1pm in the UK).

It is the second deadly crane collapse in New York in as many months. Seven people were killed on March 15 when a crane being lengthened fell and demolished a townhouse.
