1000kg construction site bomb starts ticking

A massive World War Two bomb found by construction workers near the London Olympic site started ticking as the army tried to defuse it yesterday.

Royal Engineers managed to disable the fuse, preventing the 1000kg German bomb from going off, but not before liquid began seeping from the device.

The bomb was found by Volker Stevin workers excavating land near the Prescott Channel where they are building a lock system that will transport construction materials to the Olympic site.

The project had been delayed since it was found on Monday and workers are still not allowed on site.

A 200m exclusion zone has been set up around the device and will stay in place until it is made safe.

Police expect it could be secured this afternoon.

Tube trains on the Hammersmith and City line and District lines have been disrupted by the discovery.
