Surface maintenance workers were dismissed as 'pikeys' by Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle, after blacktop crumbled on part of the track at last Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.
The comment came as Brundle was interviewing F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.
"There are some pikeys there at 10am putting tarmac down - what do you think of that," he asked Ecclestone.
ITV said that it had received a "small number" of complaints about the derogatory comment and apologised for any offence.
Media regulator Ofcom is considering whether to investigate.
