Man killed by girder on Bovis site

A construction worker was killed on a Bovis Lend Lease site when he was hit by a steel girder last week.

The man, named unofficially as 38-year-old Hugues Makambila, was working for construction logistics firm Wilson James on a site in Brentford, when the accident occurred on 5 June.

Makambila is understood to have been walking along a walkway when the steel, allegedly being loaded onto a lorry, fell and struck him.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman confirmed that the London Ambulance Service was called to the scene at 11:23 that morning after the man was "hit with a steel girder" but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive is understood to be investigating.

Neither Bovis Lend Lease nor Wilson James would comment on the circumstances of the accident.

A Wilson James spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with Hugues’ family and friends at this very sad time.
We will do everything we can to ensure we provide the support that they need.
We are co operating fully with both the HSE and the principal contractor.”
