Works stops on Olympic Stadium

By Grant Prior

Workers were ordered off the main Olympic Stadium job today after deadly asbestos was discovered on the site.

Project sources told Contract Journal: “During the work asbestos was unearthed near where the running track is going to be so the site has been shut down.

“The lads have been told to go home while the authorities find out exactly what is down there.”

The Sir Robert McAlpine-led Team Stadium consortium only started work on the site in May and the job is currently in the piling phase.

An Olympic Delivery Authority spokesperson said: “There has been a discovery of some small samples of asbestos within the Olympic Stadium site and work has been halted in one section of the site as a precautionary measure.

"Work on the rest of the Olympic Stadium site and the rest of the Olympic Park continues as normal. We are working with the relevant authorities and expect work to re-start progressively as protective measures are put in place over the next few days.”
