Pre-screening system helps Offerton cut waste

Offerton Sand and Gravel is reclaiming up to 100% of demolition waste and more than 90% of skip waste using a pre-screening system.

Incoming waste material is first processed by an Extec E-7 track-mounted mobile screen, which feeds fines directly to an Extec S-5 tracked screen to produce topsoil, border soil and sub-soil in below 6mm, 6mm and 12mm grades.

Output from the E-7 of 25mm is used to produce sub-base material, while anything over 40mm is fed into a Fintec 1107 mobile crusher to produce a 75mm product for construction applications.

Steel reinforcing bar is pre-sorted and processed once a week by the Fintec crusher.

"It's an unusual set-up," said site manager Martin Ridgeway. "Normally, you would crush first and screen second. But by screening first, we can control precisely what is extracted at all stages of the process, allowing us to retain more value from the waste stream."
