Business & Enterprise report: CC welcomes chief construction officer plan

The Construction Confederation has welcomed a plan to create a "chief construction officer", floated in the Business & Enterprise Committee's report into the construction sector.

The Construction Matters report recommended the creation of the post to tackle the issue of fragmentation of construction policy and procurement across government.

Construction Confederation chief executive Stephen Ratcliffe said: "The idea of a champion to provide a single point of engagement between the industry and the public sector makes sense on a number of levels, not least to provide some continuity to counteract the frequent changes in construction minister.

"It is essential, though, that this champion has the experience and standing to command respect from business and government and has the clout to deal directly with key minsters.

"The Chief Construction Officer should also be able to deliver solutions to some of the issues highlighted in the report such as helping the industry plan for additional capacity and encourage investment in areas such as training, new technologies, innovative ways of working and client relationships."
