Tarmac announces 300 job losses

By Colin Sowman

Tarmac has joined a growing list of companies announcing redundancies, with 300 jobs to go across its business.

Around 180 of the redundancies are in the building products divisions with the company mothballing four mortar plants (Cambridge, Meriden, Middlesbrough and Northampton) and two TopBlock facilities (Cambridge and Linford, Essex).

One shift is being cut at the TopBlock operation at Hilton Main and at the TopFloor operation.

The TopBlock sales operations at Durham, Ford, Newark and Hilton Main, Essex, are being moved to Tarmac’s Wolverhampton head office. There are also headcount reductions taking place across all three operations.

While these job cuts are in response to trading conditions, Tarmac points out that the plants are only being mothballed until business levels return. However the pre-cast production facility in Kirkby, Nottinghamshire is being closed in a long-planned rationalisation which will cost 130 people their jobs.

Work from Kirkby is being transferred to plants in Somerset and Lincolnshire which has just undergone a £1.5m upgrade.
