Haslam Homes will cut 77 jobs and close a division as it battles the housing downturn.
The housebuilder, owned by social housing company Keepmoat, will close its Midlands office in Kegworth, Leicestershire, leaving it with three regional bases.
The firm was about to start on a multi-million pound development at Blakenhall Gardens in Wolverhampton but the project, to include 36 apartments and 100 homes, is now on hold.
Haslam Homes managing director Peter Hindley said: “It is with great regret that, due to the extreme and rapid downturn throughout the housing market, we have been forced to make 77 redundancies across all of our regional offices.
“This has been a very tough decision to make.
“We have looked at every way possible to try and avoid redundancies, but unfortunately, because of the current market conditions it is impossible to sustain our staffing levels.
“We fully anticipate that we will get back to full capacity just as soon as confidence returns and markets improve."
