The firm behind London’s futuristic Canary Wharf Station has won the contract to build a spectacular “hovering” bridge in Dubai.

Royal Haskoning will provide the engineering know-how to build a 450m long bridge that will link Palm Jebel Ali – the largest Palm Island built to date – with the waterfront.

The 50m wide bridge will have a free span of 225m and “float” in a web of 72 stay cables between two 135m pylons.

It will carry eight lanes of traffic and two pavements for cyclists and pedestrians.

The firm won the job through a global design competition organised by local developer Nakheel.

The Palm Islands are artificial islands constructed in the shape of a palm tree off the coast of Dubai.
