Like a chocoholic on a block of Cadbury, plant hire company Hewden has demolished a 1,000 tonne hotel made of sand on the Dorset coast.

The Weymouth Beach hotel, built as part of a publicity stunt, was taken out by a CAT 312 excavator in a matter of minutes.

Hewden donated the 12 tonne machine to take out the hotel, which stood for a week and was the largest sandcastle ever built.

Hewden sales manager Ray Felton said: “Hewden is the biggest plant hirer in the country and we are always keen to be involved in the local community.

“With so many depots across the country, I felt we were well placed to offer our services with no charge to the sculptor or the council.”

The Sandcastle Hotel used 1,000 tonnes of sand from the beach and required an almost constant supply of sea water to ensure that it kept its shape during the building process.
