Plant trainers fear tough new tests could force mass drop-outs from the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS).
ConstructionSkills has made theory and practical exams harder.
The number of questions in theory tests has risen from less than 20 to 60.
Trainers said the tougher standards meant those serious about gaining a CPCS card would have to start studying.
One trainer said: "Have we forgotten why most of these guys came into the industry - because they are good with their hands and not with the pen?"
ConstructionSkills' spokesman Mark Bodger said the new tests will reduce workplace accidents and protect employees from manslaughter laws.
