Self-builders hard at work despite downturn

While professional housebuilders are struggling to stay busy, self-builders are getting on with the job.

Industry experts said self-build interest in new homes remained steady because the homes have better energy efficiency and lower running costs than old buildings.

John MacDonald of timber frame kit house manufacturer Skye Homes reported business growth of 35% year on year and said he was investing heavily for future growth as interest from self-builders had not dropped.

He said a lot of people were selling their homes in the city to build new ones in the countryside.

A survey of 500 self-builders and renovators by BuildStore also found more than 90% intended to continue with their projects despite the credit crunch.

BuildStore managing director Raymond Connor told the Scotsman: “The current market conditions have helped to create a more favourable environment for self-build, with people recognising it is an affordable and rewarding way to improve their position on the property ladder.”
