An overview of French-owned construction giant Vinci, now a major player in the UK.
Vinci has become a Top 10 construction player in the UK market as a result of snapping up Taylor Woodrow Construction.
The £74m deal has created a business with 4,600 employees.
Vinci trades in the UK as Vinci plc. In 2007, Vinci UK made a pre-tax profit of £40m, a rise of £8m while the turnover figure of £770m was well ahead of the £630m in 2006.
The acquisition of Taylor Woodrow Construction (known in the industry as Taywood) was secured on 8 September after the two parties had talked over a period of eight months.
In 2007, Taywood made an operating profit of £18m on a turnover of £600m.
The turnover of Vinci plc with the addition of Taywood is now £1.4bn. The man in charge is John Stanion, chairman and chief executive.
Vinci plc has several operating companies, the largest three being Norwest Holst, Crispin & Borst and now Taylor Woodrow.
It has made no secret of its appetite to grow further in the UK.
Vinci plc is part of a French-based pan-European group which is also called Vinci. It has 158,000 employees in 90 countries. The parent company’s annual turnover ran to £25bn in 2007.
The group is quoted on the French stock exchange. Overall profit divides equally between the contributions from two areas of operation: construction and concessions such as French toll roads.
