Health and Safety Executive (HSE) chief inspector of construction Stephen Williams is to leave his post to oversee health and safety at the 2012 Olympics.
Williams will take up the job as director of field operations (London) and the Olympics.
He will continue in his current role as chief inspector of construction until the role is filled.
Williams joined HSE in 1977 as a factory inspector and worked on the Channel Tunnel and Dartford Bridge construction projects. He also headed HSE's construction policy team.
In 2000 he became deputy chief inspector of railways, before becoming HSE's chief inspector of construction in 2005.
