Carter Lauren builds landmark green Premier Inn hotel

Building firm Carter Lauren has started work on a green hotel that could set new standards in mass market accommodation.

The Premier Inn Tamworth hotel in Staffordshire will aim to use 80% less energy than a normal hotel and be a test-bed to trial green technologies.

The £1m project is under construction to be completed in December.

It will feature ground source heat pumps, enough solar power to heat 1,000 baths a year, grey water recycling, thermal and acoustic insulation and motion sensor LED lighting.

Premier Inn said the project had the potential to transform how it procured property and construction in the future.

Alan Parker, chief executive of Premier Inn’s parent company Whitbread said: “This hotel is truly ground-breaking in that this combination of technologies has never been used before in the UK.

“Hotel energy use is a complex equation and we have taken a first step in deploying all technologies available to us, in order that we get it just right.

“This will allow us in the future to implement sustainable practices across our wider estate.”
