Tunbridge Wells-based construction firm John Jarvis and its sister company, plasterers Cartwrights, have gone into administation with the loss of 35 jobs.
The 125-year-old contractor had an annual turnover of around £4m and built several well-known buildings in the area including Tunbridge Wells' Opera House and the Kent and Sussex hospital.
Quoted in the Kent and Sussex Courier, John Jarvis chairman Ernest Turley said: "The unforeseen impact of the credit crunch and its severe effects on the construction industry has made it impossible for John Jarvis Ltd and Cartwrights to survive."
