The hotel group behind Dubai's luxury Burj Al Arab "billowing sail" hotel will build a super luxury five star hotel in Glasgow.

Jumeirah Group has appointed Progress Property Developments (PPD) to build the 25-storey hotel, to feature a rooftop cocktail lounge, in Argyle Street.

The hotel will have 160 rooms and 85 serviced apartments and open in the city in 2011.

Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell told the BBC: “Today’s announcement is a resounding vote of confidence in Glasgow and its future ambitions.

“This is made all the sweeter by the fact that Jumeirah does not operate anywhere else in the United Kingdom outside London.”

PPD is one of four consortiums bidding to build Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games village.
