A flooring subcontractor was trapped by a two tonne girder when the building he was working on collapsed in Preston, Lancashire yesterday (Tuesday).

The 24-year-old from Manchester suffered a broken leg after a corner of the mixed use development known as Cross Roads collapsed.

Fire crews worked to save the man’s leg using high pressure air bags to lift the debris off him before taking him to hospital for treatment.

St Annes fire service manager Graham Knowles told local newspaper the Lancashire Evening Post: “It was quite a dangerous situation for our crews as the structure was not safe.

“He was under a lot of building blocks and debris.”

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.
