Balfour Beatty is set to begin work on the £200m-plus A421 road scheme between the M1 and Bedford.
The firm, which won the job through an early contractor involvement agreement in late 2005, said design work had been completed and it was ready to start.
The project will remodel the M1 junction and build a new 13km dual carriageway linking with the Bedford ring road.
The Highways Agency said the scheme’s budget was between £201m and £231m.
The new road is scheduled to open in late 2010.
