Willmott Dixon has chalked up a £26m deal to build a new city centre campus for the University of Wales in Newport.
BAM Construction was originally in line for the job after winning the first-stage tender exercise. But it is understood that issues over price led to the client switching contractor.
Work on site is expected to kick off in December, with completion set for 2010.
The project includes four lecture theatres, gallery and study spaces, restaurant and roof-top board room.
