Wrekin Construction buys Toft Johnson

By John Leitch

Wrekin Construction has bought Toft Johnson, a civils and construction group based in Staffordshire.

Toft was established over 40 years ago. With 35 employees it specialises in several sectors: public buildings, schools, hospitals and warehousing. It undertakes contracts in the West Midlands area.

Recent projects have been undertaken for the NHS, the Royal Mail and the Ministry of Defence.

Contract values typically range from £50,000 to over £2 million.

Based in Chesterton, Toft is one of five main contractors on the Renew North Staffordshire panel – a partnership of local organisations that are working together to deliver a £2.3 billion investment programme. This status was won thanks to the efforts of Toft’s chairman Martyn Johnson.

Wrekin has kept the details of what it paid for Toft under wraps.

Wrekin was founded in 1960 and now has over 530 full-time employees across England and Wales.

Peter Greenwood, joint managing director of Wrekin, said: “This acquisition will give us an increasingly diverse client base that reduces our exposure to any single area of the economy and provides a robust defence against this and any future downturn.

The Johnson family have added that they fully support Wrekin and hope for a successful future.
