Miller Construction has walked away with a £20m contract to expand Hartlepool Sixth Form College in Brinkburn in Northumberland.
The firm will restore the college’s main Edwardian building and also construct a new two-storey 9,000m2 building to house 1,000 students.
It will also install a transparent roof between the two buildings to shelter students.
Construction of the new building has begun and will be followed by the renovation of the Edwardian building.
The entire project is due for completion in 2010.
Miller operations director Garry Hope said: “Working on a project like this, where the college will remain operational throughout, is always a challenge but we have extensive experience in the education sector and will be working closely with the college to ensure that students are not disturbed during the two-year project.”
