Transport for London (TfL) has opened the bidding for a £500m contract to redevelop Tottenham Court Road Station.
An OJEU notice advertising the mammoth project went live this morning, with bids due by 1 December.
The contract to expand the existing ticket hall by six times and double the station’s capacity will be awarded in September 2009, with work to start November 2009.
A separate contract will be advertised at a later date to build a new Crossrail station at Tottenham Court Road, which will connect to the refurbished Tube station.
A TfL spokesman said: “A notice has been placed in the Official Journal of the European Union seeking expressions of interest for the main works contract for the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road Tube station.
“This is certainly one of the biggest contracts to be tendered at this stage of the Crossrail project.
“By 2017, Tottenham Court Road will be one of the most important stations in the West End serving both London Underground and Crossrail.”
Preparatory construction work has already started at the station, with the focus on utility diversions.
Compulsory acquisition notices have been issued to surrounding buildings that must be demolished to allow for the redevelopment. Possession of the properties is expected in January 2009.
