National Trust to turn eco-warrior in fight for green spaces

By Roxanne Millar

The National Trust has vowed to take a warrior-like stance to fight the development of green field land, despite the government’s house building targets.

In a move that could put the trust on a collision course with the government, it has decided to go on the offensive to protect green spaces and woodlands.

It will work in partnership with local communities to fight developments and share its’ experience of managing local green spaces with councils.

Trust policy adviser Tony Burton told the Times: “We are going to lead the charge in places where significant development is proposed and we will be standing up and saying loudly that these plans are not acceptable.”

The new stance comes following a year-long consultation of its membership and polling of the public.
