Inquiry reveals substandard kerb drains on UK roads

By Carol Millett

The Highways Agency (HA) will introduce stricter controls on drainage products following an investigation into claims that substandard kerb drains have been used on miles of Britain's motorways.

The investigation was triggered after leading manufacturers, including Fowler & Holden, ACO and Marshalls, claimed kerb drainage products did not meet strict HA load-bearing specifications and didn't have the correct accreditation.

The HA is to publish new guidance next month setting out strict standards suppliers must meet within six months.
