The Scottish government has given the go-ahead for Donald Trump's proposed £1bn golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

Plans for the resort, which will feature two golf courses as well as homes, have been under the microscope for two years.

It was initially rejected by an Aberdeenshire Council committee. But the Scottish government called the plans in and finance secretary John Swinney backed the plans following a public enquiry.

Trump said: "We are greatly honoured by the positive decision and believe that the people of Scotland will be extremely happy with the final product.

"It will be a tremendous asset and source of pride for both Aberdeenshire and Scotland for many generations."

But the controversial course, although welcomed by local business groups, was opposed by groups including Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and RSPB Scotland, who were concerned about it being built on sensitive natural sand dunes.
