Amey wins £560m Midlands MAC deal

By Brian Warner

Solo bidder Amey has accelerated past four consortia to emerge as the preferred bidder for a highways maintenance deal worth up to £560m in the Midlands area.

The Highways Agency’s (HA) Area 9 managing agent/contractor (MAC) project was also priced by InterRoute (Balfour Beatty/Birse); Interserve/Atkins; A1 Plus (Costain/Colas/Halcrow); and EnterpriseMouchel.

The HA is expected to award the contract next month, allowing Amey a six-month mobilisation period
for the new deal.

Amey/Mouchel’s present contract expires on 30 June 2009, with the new one kicking off on site the next day.
Area 9 weighs in at between £70m to £80m a year and will initially run for five years. But depending on performance, Amey will have the opportunity to take a two-year extension.

Area 9 centres on the Midlands and includes motorways and A-roads in eight counties and three metropolitan boroughs, plus the City of Birmingham.
