A delegation of construction and engineering firms are in Dubai hoping to secure new business as part of the biggest ever trade mission to the region.

More than 200 UK firms from various sectors will convene tomorrow (Thursday) at a UK Trade and Investment event to help them win contracts in the Gulf and North Africa.

The Britain in the Region will offer British companies a one-stop shop for advice and commercial opportunities to expand into overseas markets.

Most of the firms are small and medium businesses, such as Manchester quantity surveyors Harvey & Co.

Business ambassador Lord Digby Jones said in a time of economic hardship the UK should strengthen its position as the global partner of choice.

“The majority of the companies attending…are small to medium sized businesses who now, more than ever, are looking to find new ways of doing business, new markets, new opportunities and new business partners,” he said.

The event comes off the back of the Middle East’s top construction fair The Big 5, which featured almost 3,000 exhibitors.

Around 65 British construction firms attended the week-long event, representing the construction products industry.
