Plans to move the A483 trunk road around a Welsh village have been given the go-ahead after years of delays.
Minister for the Economy and Transport Ieuan Wyn Jones said work would start on the scheme at Four Crosses, near Welshpool, Powys, in autumn 2009.
The local community has been campaigning for the project since 1994 but it was dropped from the Highways Agency’s improvements programme in 2006.
The scheme will see the trunk road, which links England and Wales, moved westwards to cut accidents and improve journey times in the area.
Jones told the BBC: “The construction of a new section of trunk road to the west of Four Crosses, will remove cars and heavy goods vehicles from an existing substandard route which passes through the heart of the community.”
