Carillion has been awarded a £170m highways maintenance contract in Canada

The six-year contract in Alberta is scheduled to run from July 2009 to 2015. Carillion will provide all routine and specific maintenance of the highway infrastructure.

The new contract will border on Carillion's existing highways maintenance contracts in Alberta, and comprises four Contract Maintenance Areas (CMAs). These include the equivalent of 3,800km of two-lane primary and secondary roads in such places as Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan and Athabasca.

Carillion now maintains the equivalent of 16,000km of two-lane highway in Ontario and Alberta.

John McDonough, Carillion chief executive said: “It increases our share of the Alberta highways services market to around 30% and confirms our position as the largest private sector highway maintenance contractor in Canada"
