York House £220,000 debt brings down DDS Group and DDS Fabrications

By John Leitch

Roofing contractors DDS Group and DDS Fabrications who were left with a £200,000 shortfall when York House Construction went bust in November, have been unable to survive this bad debt and are now in the process of going into liquidation.

The sister companies, based in Newton Aycliffe in county Durham, had survived an earlier knock - they battled against a bad debt running to £150,000 when Durham Structures went into administration last summer.

“They took that one on the chin and fought their way through the knock-on effects,” says Andy Haslam, proposed liquidator who works in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne office of Begbies Traynor.

The meeting called to put DDS Group and Fabrications into liquidation has been called for 29 January.

“The reason for the present situation is that bad debt from York House Construction,” said Haslam. “The companies have had their feet swept from under them. It’s wiped them out.”

DDS Group was founded in 1994 by its present managing director Mike Darnell and began life as a subcontract drawing office employing 10 StruCAD and AutoCAD draughtsmen, servicing the local structural steel and industrial cladding markets.

Turnover had risen to £13m a year.

The range of services had grown to include:

  • canopies
  • point-fixed structural glazing
  • footbridges and walkways
  • rain screen cladding
