More than 48,000 construction workers were made redundant during the final quarter of last year.

The figure represents a major surge in the rate of lay-offs with official figures showing 109,000 construction employees were made redundant during 2008.

The figures represent only directly-employed workers and experts fear the number of self-employed workers leaving the industry could double the tally.
