The structure is being built on the site of the former West Ham tip, and will have a network of more than 900 piles driven up to 26 miles beneath the ground.

The Olympic Delivery Authority is working with contractors, architects, track designers and Olympic Champion Chris Hoy to try and create the fastest track ever.

The 6,000 seat Velodrome is the third sports venue on the Olympic Park under construction. When finished it will host the Olympic and Paralympic indoor track cycling events in 2012.

The legacy Velodrome will include a cafe, bike hire and workshop facilities and the venue designs include a 360 degree concourse level offering views across the Olympic Park and the London skyline. The legacy velopark will feature a reconfigured BMX course, a new one mile road circuit and mountain bike trails.

ISG was also responsible for replacing the track at the Manchester Velodrome, which opened in 1994 and has become the busiest Velodrome in the world.

David Lawther, ISG chief executive officer, said: "After months of thorough planning the construction team is delighted to now be focussed on the physical delivery of the world’s fastest Velodrome."
