Miller UK launches new fully automatic quick hitch

Miller UK has introduced the TwinLock II, a fully automatic quick hitch with additional safety features above and beyond those offered on its existing automatic couplers.

Central to the system is a pivoted and gravity-activated Automatic Blocking System (ABS). Not only does this system mechanically lock the back pin's retaining mechanism in the closed position, it also drops down ahead of the front pin, preventing it from dropping the bucket if the rear pin hasn't properly engaged.

According to main board director Gary Miller, the coupler has been designed anticipating that occasionally the bucket will be incorrectly coupled. "While it is very bad practice, we know operators sometimes only engage the front pin when sorting buckets - if they do that with the TwinLock II, the bucket can't fall off," he said.

The system is activated by a covered toggle switch with a buzzer sounding while it is in the open position, and there is a check valve in the activation cylinder to maintain pressure if the hydraulic pipe is damaged. Units are available for machines from 3.5t upwards and carry a slight premium over the automatic Bug.

One of the first companies to specify the TwinLock II is Wembley-based plant hirer Flannery. It made use of Miller's exchange scheme to upgrade its existing machines with automatic couplers and has specified them on a fleet of new Cat 320Ds.
