By Neil Gerrard

Bechtel has been appointed project delivery partner for Network Rail's £2.3bn Crossrail/Reading scheme.

It's the second win for the US engineering firm, which was chosen by Crossrail as the £400m project delivery partner with responsibility for overseeing the core central tunnelled section of the route.

Network Rail major programme director Robbie Burns said: "Passengers and freight users are at the core of our work. These big investment projects at Reading and the Crossrail scheme will deliver dramatic tangible improvements. Bechtel has an excellent record of delivery and we welcome them onto our projects to complement our strong in-house team, bringing extra skills and resource."

Bechtel and Network Rail's responsibilities include:

  • Electrification and resignalling of the route from tunnel portal west to Maidenhead
  • Managing the tunnel spoilage
  • A major reworking of platforms and interchange between new Paddington Crossrail station and mainline platforms
  • Station rebuilds including a £90m project which will double the number of tracks at Abbey Wood from two to four along with major enhancements at Ilford, Romford and Ealing Broadway
  • Major junction remodelling, including Airport Junction Flyover to Heathrow
  • Bridge rebuilds, many of sensitive Brunel bridges and other heritage assets
  • Platform extensions at over 20 stations along the route
  • Timetable remodelling
