Top 5 construction tenders - 24 April 2009

This week's top 5 construction tenders include a £120m office scheme for Network Rail in Milton Keynes, maintenance projects in Plymouth and Norwich worth £100m and £36m respectively and the £10.5m repair of the Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels under the River Thames. Milton Keynes: National centre for Network Rail

  • Value: £120m
  • Network Rail is looking to appoint a contractor to design and build a new National Centre in Milton Keynes. The centre will provide office space of around 440,000 square feet and a multi-storey car park for 520 cars. The building must achieve at least a BREEAM excellent rating.

Plymouth: Housing improvement

  • Value: £100m
  • Plymouth City Council is advertising a five year framework deal on behalf of Plymouth Community Homes. The council anticipates appointing four contractors on the framework which will include improvements to kitchens and bathrooms in 15,000 homes. Call outs may last beyond the framework which, the council says, will be a long term investment as it doesn't expect a "reasonable commercial return" until the fifth year given the set up costs.

Norwich: Building alteration

Value: £36m

Norwich City Council is looking for contractors to work on a variety of maintenance and alteration projects across the city. The work is split into 14 lots and consists of routine building maintenance, housing repairs, asbestos management, disabled adaptations and utility maintenance. Contractors can bid for one or more lots.

Cardiff: Housing construction

  • Value: £13m
  • Cardiff Community Housing Association is planning to redevelop Loudoun Square. The work involves demolishing the existing retail and health centre buildings and constructing 5,000m2 of residential accommodation in its place alongside a new health centre. Associated external works and support facilities are also required.
  • Deadline: 27 April

London: Pedestrial tunnel refurbishment

  • Value: £10.5m
  • The Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels under the River Thames are in need of repair in time for the 2012 Olympics. The London Borough of Greenwich is advertising for a contractor to refurbish the structure and fabric of the tunnels, replace the lifts and electrics and improve security. Constructed in 1902 and 1912 the tunnels are 371m and 504m long and 3.3m in diameter.
